Legal English Skills For lawyers who speak English as a second language
We all know the story.
Boy loves girl.
Girl likes boy.
Everybody knows that boy loves girl but boy doesn’t have the confidence to express his feelings. Finally, boy decides it’s time to make his move and tell girl how he feels.
Disaster!
Girl has just met another boy. The new boy acted immediately, expressed his feelings and now they’re dating. Love is in the air.
Rejected boy cries himself to sleep because he should have been more confident and acted sooner. Now the girl of his dreams is dating another guy and all he can do is watch and think about what a great girl he has lost.
Some of you might be wondering what any of this has to do with work or speaking better English. So let me explain.
We all know the storyline. It’s sad and funny and most people feel sad for the nice guy who lost the love of his life. Aww. Shucks. Pass him the Kleenex.
You’re going to hate me for saying this but here’s the truth.
The nice guy is a loser. Once the train has left the station there’s no getting on it.
He let a golden opportunity slip through his fingers because he preferred to stay in his comfort zone and lacked the courage to open his mouth and let a few simple words come out.
He stayed in his comfort zone ignoring the reality of the situation: If you don’t act someone else will.
We live on a planet of 8 Billion people, let me just repeat that, 8 billion people and climbing. A world where one person’s misery is anothers golden opportunity.
If you don’t take advantage of an opportunity don’t be surprised or annoyed if someone else seizes the day and takes it from you.
Everytime you fail to express yourself confidently in English is an opportunity for someone else to impress.
Living in your comfort zone may seem like a good idea but history shows us that fortune favours the bold.
The Solution
Confidence is like a muscle, you can build it and learn how to use it. This doesn’t happen by magic or positive thinking, you have to take action.
The first action step to take is to accept that you are not performing at your best.
Second, identify what you want to improve and set a goal. One of the most effective goal setting systems is the WOOP system by Gabriel Ottingen. There’s plenty of scientific evidence to show how successful people can be using this system.
Finally, set up a system that supports your learning so that you work consistently towards your goals. If you’re not sure about systems check out this easy to follow video that explains the difference.
Improving your English skills will help you stregnthen your confidence muscle and perform better at work.
You don’t have to stay silent in meetings or take second place because your English is bad and you lack confidence.
You can transform into a confident English speaker. If you need help with this check out my ESL Fluency Blueprint here.
We live in a rapidly changing workplace. We are no longer humans we are assets but if you cannot perform because you are trapped in your comfort zone you are likely to be viewed as a liability.
If you want to change your life you have to step out of your comfort zone and unleash your power. Remember nothing beats the feeling of success, the knowledge that you did a good job and are valued and appreciated.
