Why We Love Underdogs

We love stories about underdogs. Think of the Rocky movies or the story of David and Goliath. Everybody loves an underdog story, they make us feel good. But what is the reality behind stories like David and Goliath and does it help us to empathise with the underdog?

In the story of David and Goliath people like to think of David as the underdog. The humble guy who killed a giant with a single stone.

👉This way of thinking keeps them positive when they go into situations unprepared, like a meeting with a client who only speaks English.

😭They feel anxious before the meeting because they know their English isn’t good.

🫢They hope they will get through it because they believe the underdog can win.

Here’s the truth:

David was always going to win.

David was the favourite not the underdog.

💪💪David had a tactical advantage because he had a lethal weapon and was skilled in the use of it.

A slingshot was known to be a powerful weapon, it was so deadly that Roman soldiers were trained to use it. He wasn’t an underdog. He was the favourite!

👉If you work in an international environment English is your slingshot and words are your stones. Being the underdog is not a good strategy.

👉To improve confidence and fluency in English you need to practice.
